When most people paint their house it's for aesthetics . While everyone has their own personal takes on colour, finding the right shade for your home means more than just picking up any bucket of paint that looks appealing. Experts say it’s just as important to truly analyze how a color makes you feel, rather than sticking to design trends.

Here are some ideas to help you choose colours not only appealing to the eye, but to your mood as well.

Reds and other warm tones like yellows, oranges, and earth tones such as brown and beige often work well in areas like the foyer, living and dining rooms. They are stimulating colours and encourage people to sit around and talk. Red can increase the pulse, heart rate and blood pressure.

Blue is considered beneficial to the mind and body. It slows human metabolism and produces a calming effect. Greens and lavenders also have a similar affect. Good colours for the bedroom to help promote sleep.

Whites, blues, greens and turquoises are colours that give the feeling of being fresh and clean so are popular colours for the bathroom.

Green is thought to be the colour of concentration and be good for a home office. It's a colour to be surrounded in for long periods of time.

Some prefer white walls and adding colour with decoration, pictures, rugs and furniture.

Add color to liven things up; subtract it to calm things down such as neutrals.

These are only ideas about how colour can affect your mood and thoughts. It is best to choose colours in your house that suit you, your family and your lifestyle. Or it can be a recipe for disaster. For example; red can be stimulating and promote conversation or it can cause a person to feel agitated and even angry. While light colors can be expansive and airy to one person they might feel cold and empty to another. Dark colors may be cozy and warm to one then heavy and closed in to another.

So, next time you decide to paint you may want to use a little psychology in choosing colours instead of going with the trends to make your home really feel good to you! After all you are the one that has to live with your new paint colour.

Happy painting!
